8th and 9th July - Fusion
On Sunday 9th July a few Society members enjoyed the
open day at Eryldene, the lovely heritage house of the late E.G. Waterhouse.
Highlights were viewing the interior of the Georgian house decorated
for the occasion with some Ikebana flower arrangements of camellias;
touring the pretty camellia garden and Professor Waterhouse's study.
We gained an appreciation of his enthusiasm for Oriental art.
His desire to fuse Eastern and Western design was exemplified by listening
to delightful Oriental music skilfully played by two elegantly dressed
ladies, and watching demonstrations of Chinese painting, calligraphy,
and Tai Chi, while sitting on the grassed tennis court.
It was interesting to see the common Chinese practice of co-operative
art work. Franz Cheung added calligraphy to a painting by Mr. Wong
and Mr. Wong decorated a fan held by an ogre in a work created by
Franz.
Franz also produced, with great skill and speed, a wonderful dragon
in black ink on gold-tinted red paper. He dedicated the work to the
Eryldene Trust.
